A trip to Texas:  The James Earnest Daniels (02 Oct 1891 to 09 Aug 1975) Family Reunion 2007

by Travis Skaggs: Happy to be a Grandson of James Earnest Daniels

Vicki and I boarded a Southwest Airline flight from Tampa, Florida to San Antonio, Texas on Thursday evening June 8th 2007.  We arrived at our hotel the Best Western Hill Country SuitesWe were very happy with the hotel and the fact the we could use the fantastic Life Time Fitness Gym Located just across the Highway at no extra cost.  The Gym is one of the best we have every been to.  It has a fantastic place to eat, a full spa (including massage), multiple classes, many trainers, great indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and a great training area with very good equipment.

On Friday the 8TH, We headed north toward the Daniels Family Reunion.  We stopped along the way first at The Texas Hill Country Vineyard located outside Johnson City, Texas.  We were treated to a tour of the Vineyard and the processing plant.  The most fun part was a wine tasting.  We tried 9 different wines.  Our favorite was Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 made from 20 year old Vines from the Newsom Vineyard.  We just had to buy a bottle.
We went from there to Pedernales Falls State Park. This was a great Park well worth the 7 mile drive from Johnson City, Texas. Vicki and I hiked for several hours.  There are many rocks to climb and scramble over.  On the left you will see Vicki with a waterfall in the background.  This park is a place to be careful because water can rise suddenly and viscously.  Many have lost their lives here.
We returned to Johnson City, Texas and went to former President Johnson's home there as well as a museum operated by the National Park Service.  We then drove to the Johnson family ranch which is a few miles away.  Access is only granted to private vehicles after 5 pm. Prior to that time you must use a tour bus if you wish to see the Ranch.  President Johnson  is buried there with many of his  family members.

Vick at the Johnson ranch in a field of flowers.  We saw several deer there including a magnificent buck with large horns.

We arrived in Hasse, Texas at the home of my Aunt Wanda and Uncle Bill, where all her surviving brothers and sisters gathered except for Aunt Bonnie.  Pictured from left back are my Aunt Dorothy, My beautiful mother, Frances, and My Aunt Wanda.  Left front: My Uncle Melvin Daniels, 91 years of age, and my Uncle A.D. Daniels, 92 years of age.  Three are gone: Uncle Gilbert, Uncle Bernice (92) and Aunt Ernestine.

Vicki got into the spirit of Texas with a cowgirl hat.  Picture is taken outside at my Aunt Wanda's and Uncle Bill's home

.
Vicki and I got up early and headed for the "Dr. Pepper Festival" located in Dublin, Texas where there is a choice of a 10K, a 4K, or  2K run, a festival, and crowning of  Miss Pretty Peggy Pepper.

One of the original Dr. Pepper Bottling plants is located in Dublin, Texas  where the original formula containing, " Imperial Pure Cain Sugar" is still used.  Vicki and I  put on our Kangoo Jumps and did the race.  Governor Rick Perry of Texas wasn't there this year, but three years ago, I ran with him for most of the 10k.

We then headed for the family reunion located at Proctor Lake.  My cousin, Judy and her husband Eugene brought their boat.  I had a great time skiing there.  We also enjoyed visiting with my many relatives.  We were happy that some of the family of my grand-father's brother, Alvie also came.
On Sunday, we headed to the Rock Bluff Baptist Church near Duster, Texas which was started in 1879. My family members donated land and were charter members of the church. Some of them also preached sermons there on Sunday's including my Great-Grand Father Wille and his Brother Frank.

The church  continues to this day.  The Rock Bluff Cemetery is located near there and was started in 1878.  My Great-Great-Great Grandmother Elizabeth Skaggs was buried there the 13 of July, 1884. Her husband, David is buried in Benton County, Maysville, Arkansas. He died the 17 of December, 1876.

I noticed something this time that I had not seen before: There is a faded inscription near the bottom that says almost the same thing that her husband's in Arkansas says, "Since you can no longer stay to cheer us with thy love, we hope to meet with you again in your bright world above."  They must have loved each other greatly.

We headed back toward San Antonio and got as far as Kerrville, Texas. Lula Santa Maria, one of my Father's first cousins lives there. The last time that I saw her was at my Grandmother, Elmina's funeral.  She is a person of character and wisdom who is worth knowing. Pictured on the left is her daughter, Mary, Travis Skaggs, her daughter Carolyn, and Lula. I was amazed at how similar  Mary's life path and mine have been.
We headed for San Antonio and stayed the night at the Riverside Ranch.  We had a very nice RV that was very reasonably priced.  The next day, we went to San Antonio to see the sights.  On the left you will see the famous Riverwalk. We also saw, the Alamo, The Hemisfair Park, Imax Theatre, The Texas Institute of Culture.
Here is a side view of the Alamo. The Alamo is  called a state shrine by many.  Here, almost 200 people chose to give their lives in the pursuit of liberty, principles, and freedom. They Remember the Alamo in Texas.
